DESCRIPTION:
Mvt only - E. Howard & Co, Boston, Reed's Chronometer, serial #7, extremely rare, N-S (just over 19S), 15J, "E. Howard & Co, Boston, Reed's Chronometer AD.AHFF" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, Reed's patent detent lever escapement, gilt mvt marked "Reed's Chronometer Pat. Aug 1st 1865, E. Howard & Co, Boston," s#7. A very rare piece featuring George P. Reed's watch escapement which was granted U.S. patent number 49155. This design by Reed was a variation on the Robin escapement that was introduced in 1791 by Robert Robin of France, and in his patent application Reed described his design as being an improvement over an escapement design that was patented in 1844 by Oramel W. Waste. The unusual "AD.AHFF" dial marking of this watch is an alphanumeric code for the year 1866. This particular watch and its escapement function is pictured and described in some detail in Gerrit A. Nijssen's February 2005 NAWCC Bulletin article entitled "George P. Reed & Hiram W. Smith, Two of Greater Boston's Individual Watchmakers" (pages 3-24), and a copy of this bulletin is included with the watch. From the Wing family collection.
